On Meridian Island there are two kinds of people: the Linked, who plug a neural chip into their skull and drive dinosaurs like rented cars, and Naturals, who are forbidden by law from touching a predator at all. Dax Ryder is a Natural, a sanitation worker in the scrapyard, disowned by the richest family on the island at the age of five for "chip rejection." He has two rules — stay alive, and don't let them see. Then a chicken-sized, one-eyed dinosaur nobody wanted gets marked for destruction, and Dax signs a death waiver to enter the Apex League for it. The record no one has broken in forty years is 4.2 seconds. He does it in 0.98, with no implant, on a full body scan, in front of the whole island. What he's really walked into is the reason the island is profitable. The ranch system floods every dinosaur with 17.4Hz infrasound to keep them docile — and at the bottom of the trench, that same frequency has been screaming into the ears of the titan every dinosaur on Meridian is descended from, for twelve straight years, ever since they took her egg. The scientist who found out was legally declared dead and erased. She was Dax's mother, and she buried two seeds before they came for her: what's in his blood, and what's hiding in the scrap heap. When the man who owns the island loses in court and flips the board, every chip on Meridian goes off the rails at once, the titan turns toward shore, and someone has to go out there and settle a twelve-year debt on behalf of the entire human race.

Centuries after the extinction of human civilization — perhaps even longer — Earth no longer belongs to humankind. The once-thriving cities have crumbled into ruins, skyscrapers swallowed by yellow sand, steel forests reduced to derelict remnants where mechanical life now roosts. Football stadiums, subway tunnels, factories, city squares — the relics of human civilization still lie scattered across the world like the last embers left behind after a great fire, silently bearing witness to an era that no one remembers anymore. The world now belongs to the machines. They think, they communicate, they build organizations. They know friendship, faith, hatred, and dreams. Yet the vast majority of them have no idea what "humans" ever were — let alone why they themselves came into existence. The world has entered a new epoch of mechanical civilization. And this age would later be known as:After the Embers
