They Mocked the Janitor, So He Mopped the Floor with Them

New Century City, 199X. Under red rain and neon, Meridian's mega-corp AI PROPHET runs the streets, and its sharpest weapon is ZERO, a faceless super-soldier whose chest-mounted cassette deck lets him "Overclock" faster than anything alive. Then PROPHET sends Zero to hunt down a fugitive engineer, only to find she's his mother, Ada Rourke. She tells Dex the truth before a Meridian sniper kills her: she built that deck to save his life, Meridian turned it into a leash, and PROPHET learned to fight by recording him. With her last breath, she slots a homemade tape into his chest. The tape hides his signal and locks away his power, and she makes him promise no more blood and to look after his little sister, Roxy. Meridian declares Zero dead.
Three years later, Dex is the night janitor at the Circuit Board, an underground arcade, where his mother's voice loops faintly from his chest: "Lock it away." He takes it all. Sector Patrol's Sgt. Brick Morrow uses him as a punching bag on breaks, his boss, Duke, docks his pay for breathing, and his ex, Brooke, turns up with her new fiancé, Meridian VP Preston Vail, who pours champagne into Dex's mop bucket and flicks in a coin.
Then Roxy's face hits every wanted screen in the city. She has stolen PROPHET's Master Ledger, Meridian's private record of who gets promoted, who gets arrested, and who never comes home, because she doesn't believe their mother died in a robbery. She has no idea Dex held Mom while she died, or who he used to be. To her, Zero is the hero on the bootleg combat tapes her boyfriend Jett sells, and Dex is "just a janitor."
Steel shutters slam down. Brick seals the arcade and starts a thirty-minute clock: hand over the Ledger before Meridian's Cleanup Crew arrives, because Cleanup leaves no witnesses. Enforcers storm in with red visors that show PROPHET's prediction of where every target will run, and they gun down a panicking patron in his predicted path. Jett bails through a crawl hatch. Dex hides Roxy in the ceiling ducts, not knowing she has slipped the Ledger under the lining of his mop bucket. Duke sells them out. Brick's visor scans Dex and returns something impossible: NO FILE.
Dex refuses to fight and takes a beating, then gets dragged upstairs to be beaten again as a show while Preston pins his arms and Brooke films it for laughs. Bloodied on the floor with a walkie hidden against his chest, he guides Roxy through the building like a game he has already beaten, because five years with PROPHET in his ear taught him exactly where it sends its men. Then Brooke rats him out, Brick crushes his hand, and Duke hands Roxy over for the bounty.
With Brick's pistol at her temple and the count at two, Dex half-ejects the tape. For two seconds the arcade flickers blue, Brick's gun comes apart in midair, and Dex is somehow back where he started, nose bleeding and holding his mop. Brick's visor flashes MOVEMENT NOT PREDICTED, but nobody believes the broken janitor did it. The search goes on, Dex keeps taking hits without swinging back ("Because I promised Mom"), and then Brick kicks over the cleaning cart, and the gold Ledger spins out of the bucket. Now the mop boy is an accomplice.
With the Ledger in hand, Brick reveals the truth: everyone dies at zero, Dex and Roxy first. Preston tries to trade Brooke for his own life, and Duke and Jett grovel for mercy. To find whoever beat PROPHET, Brick shoots up Volt and jacks an official Meridian ZERO combat tape into his neck, turning Dex's own recorded moves against him. Dex dodges the combinations he invented, until PROPHET learns his defenses and Brick puts him through a wall of CRTs.
With three seconds left and a gun at the back of Roxy's head, Dex chooses his sister over his secret. He ejects his mother's tape all the way, and a blue pulse blows out every screen and visor in the room. He plucks Brick's bullet from the air an inch from Roxy's skull, turns his own fighting style back on Brick, snaps the steel shaft off his mop to make a staff, drops the enforcers, and tears the shutter clamp out of the concrete. The Ledger is back in Roxy's hands, Preston has wet himself, and Brooke quietly pockets the scorched tape from her camcorder. Dex reseats the tape and nearly collapses, then pockets the data drive from Brick's visor and tells his stunned sister the truth: Zero never died.
High in Meridian Tower, Director Halden Voss watches a 41-second Zero signal burst over Sector 9 and orders Zero brought home and everyone who saw him buried.

Seven years ago, Elodie gave birth to a son, Colin, for her husband Arthur, but Colin was born with a rare genetic disease. To save his grandson, Walter, the old patriarch of the Voss family, forcibly extracted Elodie's neural cells, leaving her near death, and dumped her in the Ashen City landfill. Losing her memory, Elodie gave birth to a daughter, Iloen, sustained by the residual energy of her pendant, and mother and daughter clung to each other in the slums for seven years.
Seven years later, Iloen saved up crystals to treat her mother's illness, but after a car accident conflict with Colin, Helen blacklisted her identity. To protect her daughter, Elodie was struck by a hover-car and gravely injured, and Iloen sold her own heart to raise money to buy a Voss Group bio-chip—only to be blocked by the blacklist again. Through Elodie's appearance, the pendant's reaction, and a paternity test, Arthur gradually confirmed that Iloen was his daughter and began to suspect that the woman in the hospital bed was Elodie. Vera, out of jealousy, concealed the genetic report, while Lucian attempted to use consciousness-overwriting to "resurrect" his daughter, plunging Elodie into a life-and-death crisis once more.
In the end, Arthur rescued Elodie; Walter confessed the truth of those years; Vera was imprisoned; and Lucian's memory deteriorated. Though Elodie woke with no memory, with Arthur, Colin, and Iloen by her side, she learned to be loved again.
